On August 3, the 1st year BSHM-CA students held an educational tour in different places of Manila and especially the main event of the tour is in the Fontana Resort, Clark Pampanga. The Educational tour started out as an escape from school for most of us students, bonding with friends, chance to unwind and of course, to learn new things and to gain knowledge at the same time that we may apply someday. First, we went to the entertainment room of the Resort where we discussed about the events, places of Pampanga and also some psychologic facts. After we enter the entertainment room of the Resort, there’s a short briefings about history of Pampanga, the course we took. We also did some different kinds of entertainment like singing, dancing, having fun, and eating. I learned a lot and also it is really useful because it’s important that you know how having an educational tour begins, the history and evolution of Pampanga because other people didn’t know that and I can share what I learned and discovered. After the short visit to entertainment room of the Resort, we went straight to our second destination the area of the Resort, I found myself amazed and amused because the place is really relaxing and unwinding. After we arrived in our hotel rooms, we wait for about 30 minutes because there was a huge rain that day and it looked like a storm. So it’s our time to eat lunch, relax, taking pictures, nap and retouch. After that we go back to our assigned rooms and relax and had fun there. Accordingly, it was designed for married couples to enjoy, hence the famous quote: â€Å"True love waits until marriage. † The norms of Philippine society say that it is not normal or it is immoral to engage in premarital sex, but despite this, people just cannot wait until they get wedded. This accounts for the prevalence of premarital sex in the country. At present, one can say that it’s normal to know people who had sex already. But what’s alarming is the rapid growth of the number of people who had sex before marriage . Different researches show the rise of this number. In the last century, only a few, if not zero, gave themselves to premarital sex. This information if compared to present data would give an  overwhelming  difference. Statistics  in 2008  showed that  premarital sex  was prevalent in30% of  the Filipinos. This figured is  actually small  when compared to  western countries. Unitarians believed that God existed in only one person. It appealed to mostly intellectuals. The Second Great Awakening came in 1800. Women were a large part of it. Peter Cartwright- a revivalist, traveling preacher who converted thousands to Christianity. Charles Grandison Finney- one of the greatest revivalist preachers. Denominational Diversity Many preachers preached in Western New York where the Puritans settled. The Second Great Awakening widened the lines between the classes and regions. The more prosperous and conservative denominations in the East were little touched by revivalism, and Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Unitarians continued to rise mostly from the wealthier, better-educated levels of society. The issue of slavery split the churches apart. Segà ºn el resultado obtenido de la toma de las huellas digitales - conocidas como dactilares en algunos paà ­ses- , las autoridades pueden aprobar o denegar beneficios como visas, tarjetas de residencia permanente, asilo, adquisicià ³n de la ciudadanà ­a americana por naturalizacià ³n, etc. Adems, tambià ©n pueden impedir el ingreso a los Estados Unidos de cualquier persona extranjera o proceder a su deportacià ³n, si ya estuviera en el paà ­s. En este artà ­culo se explica por quà © se utilizan las huellas digitales, cundo y dà ³nde se toman,  quà © tipo de informacià ³n se obtiene, y sus consecuencias migratorias. En cumplimiento del programa US-Visit, tambià ©n se toman las huellas en todos los puertos de entrada a Estados Unidos - puertos, aeropuertos y fronteras terrestres- . Estn excluidos de esta obligacià ³n los ciudadanos americanos, diplomticos extranjeros con visas de la familia A o G, residentes permanentes en un viaje de crucero que salieron de EE.UU. y regresan al paà ­s por el mismo puerto. Tampoco estn obligados a dar las huellas digitales ciudadanos canadienses y mexicanos en ciertas categorà ­as migratorias. Por ejemplo, estn excluidos los mexicanos residentes en la frontera que cuentan con una visa vigente de cruce, tambià ©n conocida como lser. Finalmente, tambià ©n se toman las huellas a los migrantes agarrados por la Patrulla Fronteriza cruzando ilegalmente la frontera y a todas las personas, estadounidenses o no, que son arrestadas o detenidas en cualquier parte del paà ­s por autoridades federales, estatales o locales. Si la persona que debe acudir al ASC se olvida de la cita o se equivoca, se recomienda presentarse tan pronto sea posible y explicar quà © pasà ³. I asked three different parents that I know the same three questions. The questions were: 1. What change was least expected after your baby was born? 2. How did communication with your partner and others change after having a baby? . How did having a child affect your marriage or relationship? Each of the answers I received was similar. A\ll of the parents expressed that their lives and relationships changed a lot after having children. Their relationship with friends and with their partner became a challenge. Two out of the three said they expected the challenges while one said she didn’t expect so many issues to arise with her partner. A big issue that was mentioned by all three was the fact that the time between them and their partner was cut down drastically. That became a relationship breaker for one. She chose her daughters needs over the needs of her relationship. The communication patterns described by the parents did not follow the Guidelines for Effective Communication in Families. They differed because the communication and equity was not followed. One parent chose her time and energy needed to be focused on her child and put her relationship on hold. This in the end broke up her relationship. The other two followed the guidelines to an extent but not completely. Communication is tampered no matter what way you look at it. Men and woman look at parenthood different and that may be the main reason why children have such an effect on relationships. Communication is key in any relationship. There has to be a level of understanding and respect from both ends to balance any kind of friendship or intimate relationship. Children can change a lot of things in our lives. If two people are not on the same page in a relationship or about the choices that have to made with children it can ruin the relationship all together.

In the evening nearby an inconspicuously, deserted mansion that was about fifty metres away from the narrow, odd, tarmac road in the countryside, branches creaked and birds squeaked in their nests. It seemed to him like many days since he had begun to prepare his mind for â€Å"the camp† as he always called it. Seth Winston was a fifteen-year-old adventurous teenager who was so alive, vital and positive about everything. He also had a personality that one could not ignore. He had dark, brown eyes, short black hair and olive skin. His mother had died when he was born so he had never known or missed her. However, his young and handsome father seemed to be the only relation he had in the world apart from Ruth and Peter his caring and loving best friends. Ruth Mathews was sixteen years old, had blue eyes and ginger hair. There was more connection between her and Seth. On the other hand, Peter St John was an eighteen year old; who only had one thing in common with Seth and that was camping. That Saturday afternoon at half past two, Seth, Ruth and Peter set off to go camping in the countryside. This would have been their first camp ever without Seth's father because Peter was old enough to drive and owned a driving licence. â€Å"This is going to be the best camp ever,† said Seth in an excited voice as Peter started to drive. Three hours later nearly two hundred miles away from town, the weather began to change from slightly warm and sunny to heavy rainfall. As darkness drew closer, the rain got worse every minute and the country lane became too slippery to drive the car. â€Å"I think you need to stop at the side of the road until the weather gets better Peter,† said Ruth in a tentative voice. â€Å"Don't be silly, we've only got a few more miles to go until we reach the camping site,† said Peter in a voice that was struggling to hide the fear inside him. â€Å"Guys I think I see something,† Seth said loudly wishing it was a place to escape the unexpected heavy rain. â€Å"What is it?† Ruth and Peter both spoke at the same time desperate to find out what it was. â€Å"It looks like a house. A mansion.† Seth answered in an uncertain tone. â€Å"Let's go and check it out,† Ruth suggested positively as if she knew exactly what it was. Peter made a left turn and slowly drove down in the open space towards the secluded, big mansion. When they reached the faded, rusty gate, they stepped out of the car and put their coats on. It was open so it made it easier for them to get to the mansion. In approaching the mansion, there was a chill in the air as they hurriedly walked to the door. Ruth knocked on one of the huge oak doors although they were slightly open. She knocked five times and waited but there was no response. â€Å"Hello, is anybody here?† Ruth shouted as she echoed repeatedly and as water dripped from her round face. â€Å"Did you hear that? Someone just repeated what Ruth just said,† Seth said sarcastically. â€Å"Are you stupid? That was her echo, you fool,† Peter said in a rather unimpressed high pitch voice. Helplessly desperate for shelter, they decided to step inside. The view captured their eyes. Joined cobwebs smeared the walls and an unidentified smell of rot filled their nostrils. The dusty, mouldy ceilings dripped with water. Peter seemed to be more fascinated by the unusual scene than the other two, so without them noticing, he decided to take a tour around. The door creaked behind Peter as he escaped into the next room. With their heads held up high, Seth and Ruth looked to see where the sudden noise had come from. Just as they turned round, they were horrified by a dead bat, which had fallen two metres above their heads from the spider web that hung under the ceiling. They heard a loud scream coming from the next room on their left that sounded as if someone was being tortured. They fled into that treacherous room as fast as they could. On its walls were skulls portrayed in a devilish appearance splashed with rotten blood. When they looked down, they saw a half naked body viciously assaulted dripping with blood on the black tiled floor. The floor was littered with bones and headless skeletons that were gathered through the courts of time. Satanic crosses were marked all over the ceiling and the atmosphere was heinous. Seth and Ruth could not believe the monstrous view in front of their eyes. Horrendous injuries covered the body and the eyes had popped right out of the skull. They were wide open, stony with the glassiness of death. Only one nostril was left of the nose and was dripping with mucus and blood. The lips were deformed. With a grimace of his face, Seth wondered what kind of a vicious, menacing sinister who would do such a terrible act. The slimy small and large intestines were noticeable and cut open that they dared not to look at the brutal stomach, which looked as if it had had an abdominal surgery. â€Å"I'm so sorry Peter,† said Ruth in a petrified voice trying her hardest not to burst out in tears. â€Å"Who could do such damage to an innocent soul?† Seth questioned silently as tear drops fell from his eyes. Seth noticed a sombre shadow with an axe in its hand on the wall at his right hand side. At first, he did not say anything because he was not sure where it was coming from. â€Å"Ruth look out!† shouted Seth. â€Å"Where?† Ruth shouted back. â€Å"Behind you!† Seth answered in a despairing voice. Ruth looked behind her, widened her blue eyes in terrified horror while her jaw nearly dropped on the ground and screamed, â€Å"No!† At this moment, Seth had nothing else to say or do but save himself. He ran out of the room as fast as he could and raced to the other side of the mansion as if chased by hideous demons. This end had autumn leaves on the floor that two open triangular windows had let in. He fled into the nearest room that he believed was safe as he had the intension to hide. Although it was not as bad as the previous one, this room was damp and infested but with a gnaw feeling, Seth did not take any notice. There was a rustling noise; it grew louder and more persistent. When it started, Seth had thought that leaves were blowing in the sweeping wind but now it was far too loud for that. It sounded like someone stomping through crisp packets. The rustling turned to crunching, as if some huge animal was munching on a giant creamcraker. Seth shivered. He pulled his coat tightly around him because he was cold. He clenched his fists in his pockets. He stared at the floor in front of him and occasionally glanced nervously at the door handle. â€Å"You must keep calm,† Seth repeatedly said to his self as he breathed heavily as if he was starving from oxygen. Seth desperately looked at the impenetrable window wishing he were small enough to fit through so he could escape the haunting poltergeist. In the darkness of the fading light, the poltergeist's face had the pallor and sheen not so much of flesh so much of bone itself. Seth stared at it until his eyes ached in their sockets in surprise and bewilderment at its presence. With the combination of the peculiar, isolated room, the appearance of the poltergeist and the dreadfulness of its expression began to fill Seth with anxiety. Indeed Seth, never in his life was so threatened by anything like that. He had never known his heart to give such a great lurch, as if it would almost leap out into his shivering, dry mouth and then begin pounding in his chest like a hammer hitting an anvil. Seth never thought that a dose of fear would make his knees tremble and his flesh creep. He never imagined himself daunted and held fast by such dread, horror and apprehension of evil. His worst nightmares had resurrected.

The plot of the story goes as follows. Right from the start it is made clear that scrooge’s partner Marley is dead. Scrooge then goes several years without changing a single thing in the business. He and his only worker bob Cratchit work alone in the small dark office. Then one Christmas Eve two charity workers call round to ask him to make a donation. This is when we find out that scrooge despises charity. Later that day his nephew Fred comes to invite him round for Christmas dinner, an invite that is turned down by scrooge. That night when he gets home the ghost of his dead partener marley visits him. He tells scrooge that he must change his ways or he will end up like him not being able to allow his spirit to rest. But being force to â€Å"wear to chain he created in life. † Marley tells him that he is to be visited by three spirits over the next three nights. These spirits would show him the error of his ways. The first spirit is Christmas past. This spirit shows him his past again. The things he enjoyed as a young boy and his desisons he made that affected his current life. The next spirit is Christmas present. He shows scrooge what is currently happening in the people close to him and shows him what he is missing out on. The final spirit is Christmas future. He shows scrooge what will happen in his future if he doesn’t change his ways and that he will die a lonely old man. Scrooge then accepts the advice given by the spirits and generally becomes the ideal human often giving to charity and folks worse off than him. The first stave in the novello is when his former partner Marley visits scrooge. Right form the very beginning it is made clear Marley is dead. The first words on page one are â€Å"Marley was dead to begin with† â€Å"Scrooge new he was dead† as he signed for the register of his death. So when Marley appears to him his being there traumatizes him. Marley warns scrooge of the spiritual after life. He explains that man must share his humanity with others if he is not t be condemned to an after life. â€Å"It is required by every man†¦ that the spirit within him should walk abroad. † Scrooge also observes that Marley is â€Å"fettered† Marley explains â€Å"these are these the chains I forged in life†¦ I made it link by link, yard by yard of my own free will and of my own free will I wear it. † Marley then informs scrooge of what his afterlife will be like if he doesn’t change his ways â€Å"the weight and length of the chain you bare. † Marley then tells scrooge that he will be visit by three spirits, which will show him the error of his ways. Stave two tells the arrival of the first spirit the ghost of Christmas pass. This spirit, â€Å"a strange figure, like child like, old man viewed though some supernatural substance†, shows scrooge his most enjoyable moments of his past. One place which scrooge is taken is taken is his old work place, to Fezziwigs Christmas party. While there the spirit says â€Å"a small make to these silly folk so full of gratitude. † The spirit playing devils advocate by criticises Fessiwig causes scrooge to defend him â€Å"he has the power to flauntier† the spirit also shows him women which he once loved like his sister and a girl he once loved as a young boy. Stave three shows the next spirit, the ghost of Christmas present. This spirit, a large jolly old fellow, shows scrooge the true meaning of Christmas. First scrooge is taken to the cratchits house where he is shown how much such a large family appreciate so little. He has enough money to buy what ever he wants but then he realises that the simple things to him are luxuries to then that they can’t even really afford at Christmas, The joy on the faces of the children when they see that they are getting a pudding after dinner. He even is surprised to find that they are grateful to scrooge for putting the meal on the table even though scrooge knows that he is under paying Bob Cratchit. The spirit then takes scrooge to his nephew Fred’s home where he was having a Christmas party. Scrooge sees on the fun, which he is missing out on. The games and dancing which scrooge turns down as his despises sharing his fortune. Stave four shows the arrival of the final spirit, the ghost of Christmas future. This spirit, a ghostly figure dressed in black gown, takes scrooge to see his current future if he doesn’t change his ways. The spirit takes him to see his self in the future lay in bed. This is where scrooge comforts his own dead body without realising that he is dead. â€Å"Avarice, hard-dealing, griping cares? They have brought to a rich end truly. † â€Å"This is a fearful place†¦ In leaving it, I shall not leave its lesson, trust me and let me go! † scrooge finally realises what his dead body means: he loves his nerve and begs the spirit to let him go. The ghost insists, by pointing a finger that scrooge should lift the sheet to see the body scrooge responds â€Å"I understand you†¦ and I would do it if I could. But I have not the power, spirit. I have not the power†¦ † meaning that scrooge cannot bring him self to lift the sheet because it would mean coming to terms with his own death. Scrooge wants to kwon if anyone grieved for him â€Å"is there any person in the town who feels emotion cursed by this mans death, show me and that person spirit. † The spirit shows people who grieved for scrooge: ironically it is his debtors. When scrooge has died. They have lingered to pay off the debt. Scrooge is then taken to the churchyard to a churchyard: scrooge still needs to know the identity of the dead man but has lung suspected that it is himself. Scrooge is shown a tombstone and a new grave. Scrooge remarks ironically that the graveyard is a â€Å"worthy place† full of worthless dead bodies costumed by worms. â€Å"He advanced towards it trembling† he confronts the truth. Scrooge suddenly under stands the phantom:† he saw new meaning in its solemn shape†¦ † scrooge seems to understand that he can change his future. † Tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone†¦ † scrooge is asking the spirit for a chance to avoid death. Scrooge is completely transformed â€Å"I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the past, present and future. The spirits all three shall strive within me. I will not shirk the lessons they teach. † The ghost fades away. Stave five is the final stave in the novello. It is when scrooge realises that he can alter his ways. â€Å"The time before him was his own, to make amends in†¦ † scrooge now seeks not to be a good businessman but to be a good man. â€Å"Glowing with his good intentions†¦ sobbing violently†¦ † yet even though scrooge has changed his way of life completely for the benefit of others. He is still happy with the new life he leads. â€Å"I am as a feather†¦ I am as happy as an angel; I am as merry as a schoolboy†¦ I am as giddy as a drunken man. † After scrooges complete change, the church bells ring out to celebrate Christmas morning and scrooge’s rebirth was on the birthday of Christ. Scrooge is completely changed: well-dressed and wearing a â€Å"delighted smile. † Scrooge rejoices in humanity: he enjoys the company of people and attending church. Now Scrooge visits Fred and accepts his invitation to Christmas lunch. Scrooge tells Bob Cratchit that he will raise his salary. Scrooge will become a â€Å"second farther† to tiny Tim. The transformation is complete. Scrooge has be come † as good a friend, as good a master, as good a man as the good old city knew†¦ â€Å"

A Process Oriented Approach to Waiting Line Management in a Large Pilgrimage Center in India Essay

This article documents an innovative approach to manage waiting line in the largest pilgrimage center in the world. By a judicious combination of process orientation and advances in Information Technology, the pilgrimage center’s management has been able to dramatically change the pilgrims waiting experience. The pilgrimage location under study is Tirumala located in Andhra Pradesh state in India. The number of visitors to this important location has been steadily increasing over time. As of 2011, the location attracted approximately 30 to 40 million visitors a year. The primary objective of a pilgrim visiting Tirumala is to have darshan of the principle deity in the temple. The secondary objectives include tonsure (shaving head as a mark of respect), offering donations, prasadam collection, thulabaram, arjitha seva (paid services), local sightseeing and shopping. The immense popularity of the temple and its location poses significant challenges to the management of the system. This temple is a tradition bound Institution. Therefore, some alternatives to resolve pilgrim waiting time are feasible and some are not. There are some hard constraints which may not stand the test of logic. The ability to manage the traffic volume is a function of processing rate (darshan duration) at the temple and darshan time available per day. This case study is an example of improving operational effectiveness by using formal management methods in addressing an important real life problem in an under researched area. This pilgrimage center is located in the extension of Western Ghats and is popularly known as Tirumala. It is considered to be the abode of Lord Vishnu in the form of Venkateswara. The temple is the richest pilgrimage center, after the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, of any faith (at more than 50,000 crore) and the most-visited place of worship in the world. This center attracts a large number of visitors from all over the country irrespective of their caste, religion, belief, social status and professional affiliation. The temple is visited by about 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily (30 to 40 million people annually on average), while on special occasions and festivals, like the annual Brahmotsavam, the number of pilgrims shoots up to 500,000, making it the most-visited holy place in the world. The temple is on Venkatadri (also known as Venkatachala or Venkata Hill), the seventh peak, and is also known as the â€Å"Temple of Seven Hills†. Venkatadri, the hillock residing place of Lord Venkateswara is probably one of the oldest religious institutions in India. It is known to exist for over a period of 2000 years. It has a recorded history of thousand years. Based on the recorded history, the rituals and daily routines in this sacred temple are being performed without a break for more than 1000 years. Over a period of time Venkatadri has evolved as an epicenter of Vaishnavism. Several prominent Hindu religious institutions either have established a presence in Venkatadri or have made this as place of their administrative headquarters. Today, Venkatadri is not only a religious institution, but it has also evolved as a social institution. It supports financially a group of thirty (higher) educational institutions. Its mission is to systematically promote the study of Vedas and Sanskrit literature. The temple also provides generous financial support for construction of similar temples (Venkateswara) elsewhere in the country. Over a period of 50 years, the number of visitors to the temple and the town has increased by eight fold. [I960(2 million), 1970(4 million), 1980(7 million), 1990(11 million), 2000(16 million), 2010(30 million)]. Such a huge traffic generates tremendous stress on the social and physical infrastructure of the temple down (Tirumala and Tirupati). Being a tradition bound organization, certain modifications (on procedure, layout etc.) are not acceptable. The devotees (exposed to modern social norms) who come to the temple expect a better service quality and shorter waiting time. Thus, the managerial challenge is to balance the tradition, operational efficiency and increasing pilgrim expectations. Activities in the temple and the town and their management need to be also seen from a religious perspective. There is a divine dispensation in the institution, which may not be tinkered with in whatever modification(s) that are made in the facilities redesign and management of activities. Methodology The product and its delivery Pilgrims from all over the country arrive in the temple town. Usually they reach the foothill which is known as Tirupati. The mode of transport is rail, road (public or private transport) and air. Having reached Tirupati, those who have their own transport directly proceed to Tirumala. Some spend a few hours in sightseeing and visiting other temples and religious locations in and around Tirupati. The distance between Tirupati and Tirumala is 19Kms. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) operates regular services between Tirumala and Tirupati. The round trip is about 2.5 hours including waiting time at both the boarding points. Having reached Tirumala, the pilgrims look for a suitable accommodation. There are about 5000 cottages owned and managed by TTD for pilgrim’s convenience. After (a brief) resting, pilgrims go for tonsure (there are 500 barbers who operate on a 3 shift basis; 15,000 tonsures are done in a day). The annual revenue from export of hair (from tonsure) is Rs. 100 million. Following tonsure pilgrims go for a wash and bath in the holy tank in the middle of the temple town and then join the queue for darshan. Some pilgrims on arrival at Tirumala directly join the darshan queue and after the darshan visit the tonsure centre, take a bath in the holy tank and departure to their place of residence. There are 32 waiting compartments to house pilgrims while they await darshan. The average capacity of these compartments is 500. About 17,000 pilgrims can be held in waiting at any time. The average waiting time for darshan can vary between 2-12 hours depending on the day and season. There is tremendous uncertainty as when darshan would happen. There is also anxiety as how long is the wait. There is no (accurate) information to the pilgrims on what is ahead. Because of the commitment to the pilgrimage process, individual pilgrims go through this tedious experience with reverence and patience. Finally on a FIFO basis, pilgrims arrive in front of the deity. The actual darshan lasts for about 1.5 to 2 seconds. However, the pilgrims can have a view of the deity from a distance of 30 meters from the main entrance. The travel time is about 45 seconds. Actually, the passage towards darshan admits a file of 6 or 7 columns of pilgrims to go through the darshan process simultaneously. After the darshan the pilgrims donate money at the Hundi, equivalent of donation box, located inside as well as outside the temple and then leave the temple premises. The Hundi collection is about Rs. 2000 million a year. Often, they stand in another queue to receive free laddu (there are several counters that sell laddu). Approximately, 75,000 laddus are sold in a day. In view of demand and supply gap, there is rationing and restrictions on how many laddus a pilgrim can buy. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) the administrative agency in charge of this temple provides free meal to about 25,000 persons in a day. After receipt of laddu(s) and a meal, the pilgrim returns to his cottage or wait for a transport to go Tirupati and subsequently to his place of residence.
